Originally an australopithecine from 3.2 million BCE, James was approached one day by gentleman time traveller Sir Rupert Merriweather and made an offer he would be hard pressed to refuse--to accompany Merriweather on his many adventures throughout time. James, being an australopithecine, did not undestand any of this, and clubbed Merriweather to death quite mercilessly with the upper legbone of an unidentified mammal and then proceeded to steal the time machine. After a brief jaunt into the 23rd century and a zap from an Evolve-O-Ray, James is nowadays quite regrettful about his treatment of Sir Merriweather and has vowed to take up his fight against the Cyber Time-Nazis currently plaguing the Multiverse and the Unified Parallel Dimensions. Mr. Barratt often resides in a small town in the 21st century American South known as "Gainesville" (Florida being heretofor untouched by Incident #497.A in this particular version of the Timeline).
